You Can Still Become a Stroller Roller

Sunday September 30, 2007
While the debate on safety concerns for stroller skating in parks and on bike trails rages, you can still keep fit with the family in tow by keeping it simple. Do not tackle busy trails or parks until you are a very proficient skater, if ever. Stay close to home, use clean, smooth sidewalks that are little traveled and not close to the curb. Get your workout from a steady pace, not speed. Use protective gear for yourself and your little passenger - you would do the same while driving any other vehicle. Even better, take advantage of "Stroller Skating" sessions at your favorite roller skating center. These sessions will usually be supervised by trained professionals and provide some form of traffic control on a smooth clean surface. You'll get music without a headset and will never need to cancel for foul weather.

I can’t resist commmenting on this subject since I believe I may be the person who came up with the term “Stroller Skating.” (I know I can’t prove this claim, but it is fun to think I might have made up the term.)

You see, in 1996, after I had my second baby, I wanted to inline skate, but I had a C-Section and was a bit scared to skate at the time since I was still very sore. I needed exercise though, and so I put on my skates and held on to the stroller and skated (with the baby inside) to gain confidence.

I had so much fun skating with the stroller and baby that I decided to name the experience “Stroller Skating” and wrote an article called “Stroller Skating?” about the moves I could do on skates with my stroller! I published my article on the internet since I wanted everyone to share my joy of skating with a stroller. Later, I even used a stroller to help some adults and kids learn to ice and inline skate!

Years have passed, and I’ve received positive and negative responses to my “Stroller Skating?” idea. My article has been linked to be roller skating rinks, homeschool groups, exercise groups and to other parent groups.

Anyway, thank you, Carlesa, for bringing this subject up. Stroller Skating is the best!

Happy Skating and Happy Stroller Skating!

I’d like to comment on this subject since I believe I may have been responsible for the term “Stroller Skating.”

I can’t really claim credit for naming the term since it is used by many, but I did think of the name “Stroller Skating” in 1996 after I had a baby and wanted to inline skate after a C-section.

I wrote “Stroller Skating?” shortly after thinking of the name. I had so much fun skating with my baby and toddler while pushing their strollers that I just wanted to share my joy!

I had no idea my article would be read by so many and linked to skating sites. I had no idea that the term would be used by others and that controversy would also take place over my idea!

Anyway, Carlesa, thank you for bringing up Stroller Skating!

Happy Skating!

I first became aware of “Stroller Skating” during the 1991-92 skating season. Extra teaching help was needed at the Great Skate in Roseville, Michigan for a weekday morning session called “Animal Crackers and Stroller Skate.” This session provided an inline or quad mini-lesson, music, games and an animal cracker snack for pre-schoolers and their parents. Strollers were allowed on the floor so that the skating parents could get a little excercise without leaving little ones unattended. Of course, this session was supervised by instructors to keep everyone safe. Similar sessions have existed at Southeastern Michigan rinks for many years. Two of my current competitive skaters and many others at Michigan Rinks are the result of this early exposure to a controlled but fun rink environment. Some of the stroller kids move right from one set of wheels to another, because people on wheels feels quite normal to them. What a great way to recruit new skaters and win the hearts of parents, too.

hi
Hat’s off. Well done, as we know that “Hard work always pays off”, after a long struggle with sincere efforts it’s done.

This action proves to be a win, win situation. This is a true art work, which will be a success story.
