Big Over Small Equals Balance on Inline Skates

Saturday December 22, 2007
Inline skating is based on simple physics. An inline skater is balanced properly if the big parts (head, chest and hips) are positioned over the small parts (feet). Balance, stance and posture baseline are all terminology used to convey the basic physics that keep inline skaters on their feet. All inline skating techniques for stance, falling, getting up, walking, stopping, gliding and striding are based on this simple concept.

Every advanced move, trick, jump or spin in any of the inline disciplines will rely on the skater's ability to find and keep balance. The exact body line will vary between inline roller sports. Inline figure skaters are a little more erect. Inline hockey, freestyle and recreational skaters are a little more relaxed. Inline speed skaters use a low crouch to reduce wind resistance. But, if you look at where the body weight is positioned relative to the skates, it is distributed fairly equally in the space over the skates of any accomplished skated.
