Laughter is Good Medicine for Inline Skating Egos

Thursday January 3, 2008
Most new inline skaters think there will be embarrassing situations associated with learning to skate, and some are actually afraid of looking silly while learning. Well, embarrassing situations do happen while skating. The reality is that the more proficient skaters will often experience the most embarrassing moments, because their errors and omissions will be relative to more dynamic maneuvers.

I was always an accident or incident waiting to happen as a young skater. But, my mother always used the number of falls I survived and the torn dresses, shorts and tights, either outside or in the rink, to determine how much fun I had while skating. The more - the merrier.

There are many memorable things that can happen while skating - clothing rips in the wrong place, an incredible dissappearing skate part or wheel that shows up under another skater and even outdoor animal surprises.

Just wear your safety gear, check clothing and equipment before you skate, keep a little first aid kit in your skate bag and bring a few wipes to clean up sticky or stinky situations. Learn to laugh with others and at yourself, because laughter is always going to be the best medicine for any inline skating injuries to the ego.
