I Love to Teach Kids to Inline and Quad Skate
Monday January 21, 2008
No coach should have a favorite skater. Each lesson brings a different kind of joy and sense of accomplishment to all involved. But, I do have a type of skating lesson that is the most fun, usually for everyone within hearing distance of the lesson. Working with young skaters between the ages of three and six is a wonderful experience for anyone who loves to laugh and likes a good challenge.

What are the benefits of teaching skating to young children?
- Many young skaters learn faster because their minds are free of preconceived notions.
- Little skaters are very close to the ground and usually fall safely without a lot of training.
- Young skaters have no fear.
- Pre-school skaters are less likely to challenge adults and do not have high expectations.
- Young skaters need to be trained in small digestable lessons.
- Their attention span may be short, but their brains are fertile. Be prepared to answer a lot of questions.
- Give small children a real skating lesson, and use real skating language. Most three-to-six year olds will let you know if they don't understand.
- You will need to learn how to herd your skaters into a group. Once a few are allowed to wander off, the class will deteriorate quickly.
- Be prepared to direct part of the lesson to parents and guardians. Once they understand what is being taught and why, they will be a great help.
- Make sure to have a use for every skating technique taught in the form of a game or activity at the end of class.
- A small reward (like a certificate or badge) for each child's long-term skating accomplishments will make the whole family happy.
