How Often Should You Inline Skate?

Monday February 4, 2008
"Skating is Life"
"Life...eat, sleep, skate."

There are many t-shirt slogans for skaters of all disciplines that focus on how skating will require a lot of your time. But, how often should you really skate? Many competitive athletes and serious fitness skaters may skate almost every day before or after school or work. There are bi-weekly, weekly, bi-monthly and when-I-can skaters, too. If you are skating for fun only, a "when-I-can" program is fine. Any amount of skating that fits into your lifestyle is better than none.

A good, goal-oriented inline fitness skating session does not require extended distances or lengths of time at high speeds. But, to meet any skating, training or fitness goals, whatever they may be, a serious recreational or fitness inline skater will make an effort to commit to a regular schedule of skating. Tours, marathons and competitive team activities are fun and challenging ways to integrate or encourage regularly scheduled inline skating activities, but they are not required. You can build an inline fitness training program just for you.

Some keys to building your own inline fitness skating program:
  • Find a pace that keeps you moving.
  • Plan skating sessions at scenic and accessible locations that you like.
  • Skate in the company of people you enjoy or admire.
  • Pick inline skating activities and events that are suited to your level of skating interest.
  • Try to skate on a regular schedule that fits into your lifestyle.
If you like what you're doing, you will slowly add more skating time and/or intensity to your inline skating activities. Just keep skating, and we will secretly hope you get hooked.
