Thursday March 20, 2008
USA Roller Sports, the Olympic Committee's National Governing Body for
Competitive Roller Sports in the United States, has selected Peoria, Illinois for the site of the 2009 United States National Roller Skating Championships. This event includes inline and quad speed skating as well as inline and quad figure skating and will take place from July 16 through August 10, 2009, at the Civic Center.
The event is expected to bring about 3,000 skaters to Peoria. The Peoria Journal Star reports that championship visitors will use as many as 12,000 hotel nights over a period of 25 days. One thing that helped the city win the bid for this event was that the size of Carver Arena will allow the temporary installation of one of USA Roller Sports' official portable skating surfaces.
