Obama's Policies Could Help Active Transportation
Monday November 10, 2008
Inline skating is about as green as a method of active transportation can get. So let's take advantage of it. The Rails-to Trails Conservancy has some advocacy ideas based on the reception that active transportation might receive under President-Elect Obama's new transportation policies over the next few years. Obama met with bicycling advocates soon after getting the Democratic nomination, which shows he is willing to work with walking, biking and other pedestrian advocates (maybe even inline skating commuters) to address transportation issues.
The Rails-to Trails Conservancy believes that active transportation has the potential to play an important role in revitalizing our communities, especially with the many fuel saving and fitness enhancing benefits of walking, biking and inline skating. They plan to keep pushing for government funding for more safe active transportation trails and corridors, and since inline skating is about as active as transportation can get without fossil fuels, inline skaters should be among the first to get on the list with the walkers and bikers and write letters to help make a difference.
If the politics involved in promoting a network of skate-able roads to where you want to go takes some of the fun out of rolling, just join the Rails-to-Trails Network, so you'll know where the good ones can be found.
