This Holiday Skate Comes With A Story

Thursday December 18, 2008
The FunRoll group has been doing the Santa Roll since 2001, thanks in large part to Roger Olson, the man hidden in the Santa suit. No one is quite sure when Roger made the suit, or exactly what year he started skating in it, but it's wonderful that he is doing it now. Other's have worn the suit, but Roger is the original holiday spirit.

Skaters wear skate gear in Christmas colors, add decorations on their outfits, put jingle bells on their skates or bring sleigh bells to jingle along the way. Other skaters dress up as elves, reindeer, or even Christmas trees. Then the group skates along, passing out candy and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year. The best part of the experience is seeing the spectators' reactions, especially children. Almost everyone smiles and waves at Santa, but when little children recognize Santa, the look on their faces will make you a true believer.

Now, here's the reminder that this Saturday, December 19th the Fun Roll social skate in Huntington Beach, California becomes the Annual Santa Roll. On Saturday morning at 10:30a.m. roll participants will meet just north of the Huntington Beach Pier and skate to Balboa and back again dressed up in their best holiday costumes. The pace is easy and all ages and levels are welcome. And remember, there's a real Christmas spirit named Roger behind this holiday roll.
