If you are an inline figure skater, it just looks like a spread eagle position gone wild. But side surfing - which is also known as crabbing, because the movements used to propel the skater are similar to the way that a crab moves along - is a popular maneuver for roller derby girls, vertical skaters and freestyle slalom skaters. A lot recreational skaters as well as other inline and quad disciplines side surf, too.
Visit Asha Kirkby of Skatefresh to get a great explanation of how to side surf on inline and quad roller skates.
