Love Skates, Will Travel

Thursday October 9, 2008
If you enjoy roller sports and are willing to travel, USA Roller Sports needs you for their volunteer athletic trainer program. Certified athletic trainers are needed for training camps at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, at the National Figure and Speed Skating Championships and for the USA Roller Sports World Teams that compete all over the world. What a great way to have your transportation, lodging and food expenses covered and go to USA Roller Sports training and event destinations, too.

Find out if you qualify by visiting the USA Roller Sports athletic trainer recruitment page. Or you can contact Lori Brandon, a member of the USARS Sports Medicine Committee for details.

AIL Event Makes NBC News in Philadelphia

Tuesday October 7, 2008
The NBC News/Philadelphia coverage of the Amateur Inline League (AIL) Aggressive Inline Skating World Championship at Camp Woodward West in Tehachapi, California is now online. The news feature includes stunt footage and interview clips with Shawn Martin, a 12-year-old bronze medalist at the event. Online viewer response comments from the inline skating community have been mixed. Many feel that it is too bad that a pro level adult skater wasn't shown to represent the highest end of aggressive inline skating. But others saw the value in showing a kid doing stunts and getting recognition for his performance.

Some points made in the comments include:
  • 2,000 emails came in to the station asking for information about the sport as a youth activity.

  • Kids will relate to kids, and this could draw more youth into the sport at a time when new blood is needed.

  • This TV segment could jump-start inline skate requests on Christmas lists.

  • More media coverage like this can stimulate other skating activities and related purchases.
If you check out the event results, you will see that there are several levels and age categories included in this competition. The official AIL 2008 World Championships Video Edit includes more of the senior level skating that was not shown by NBC. Just remember that any and every bit of media coverage for roller sports is good news. No skater or sports discipline will be famous if the armchair athletes don't know they exist or can't relate to them.
