What is a Foam Pit for Aggressive Vert Inline Skating?

By Carlesa Williams, About.com

Definition: The foam pit is a soft landing surface designed with a bed of foam chips underneath. It is used in more formal aggressive vert inline skating training and other extreme sports that have airborne stunts to reduce injuries. The next step is to practice the aggressive trick using a resi pit surface which is firmer but still resilient. Once comfortable landings are achieved on the resi, the skater can perform the trick with increased confidence and safety on the real competitive or location surface.

The foam pit is a supplement to, not a replacement for, protective gear.
