Outdoor speed skating is the recognized international standard and is separated into road and track racing. Road race courses usually take the form of an irregular closed loop with no bank on either side, or an actual stretch of closed road can be used for these events. These courses require constant power, with little or no opportunity to coast, so endurance is a key factor in success. This type of outdoor racing is done exclusively on inline skates.
Regardless of age or gender, inline speed skaters share a determination to race as fast and as far as they can. The current national speed records are shown below for outdoor road speed skating in the United States.
