One of the wonderful things about inline skating activities is that no exceptional skills, great strength, expensive locations or exceptional brain power is needed to participate. But, there are some things that can help make your new inline skating adventure a success. No one has it all, and you can certainly learn without them. However, if you can claim one or two of the items from the list below, you will start out with a solid foundation to begin skating.
- Good, strong, flexible knees will help you in all aspects of inline skating.
- The ability to walk for extended periods of time without falling demonstrates the balance you need to inline skate.
- Sidewalks, bike paths, a park with trails or indoor or outdoor skating facilities that are near your house or job will make it easier to access and plan regular skating sessions.
- Any past balance experience including gymnastics, dance, skateboarding, ice or roller skating will be useful in your inline skating activities.
- Good balance standing on one foot is a sign of good motor skills. If you're uncomfortable on one foot, this can be your first off-skates exercise.
- If you can get off the floor from a completely seated position without help, you have sufficient upper and lower body strength for inline skating.
- Limited fear and a relaxed attitude will speed up the learning curve for all skating activities.
- Supportive family members and significant others are a plus for new inline skaters, especially if they live with you.
You should
consider any limitations before learning to inline skate. But, you must also realize that you already have some of the things that will help you succeed as an inline skater.
