Choosing Realistic Inline Skating Goals

Build a Step-By-Step Skating Goal Worksheet

By , About.com Guide

Your inline skating goals begin with a worksheet that will work like your own personal coach to tell you where you need to go, how to get there, provide feedback on your skating progress and help keep the you motivated when you are considering giving up.

Now it's time to get out some sheets of paper (or index cards to keep it neat) and set up your own step-by-step inline skating goals. Each goal is important enough to get its own sheet.

Step-By-Step Skating Goal Worksheet

  1. Name the Goal - Define your inline skating goal and write it down with a positive twist.

  2. Goal Duration - Decide if this is a short-term, medium-term or long-term goal. This can be daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal or career goals - or whatever increments are appropriate for you to define them.

  3. Define the Challenge - Make sure that you believe in this goal and believe that it is attainable. Know the skating benefits or fitness value of achieving the goal.

  4. Action Steps - List the expected steps that should be taken to meet this skating goal - some short or medium-term goals may in fact become the steps needed for your long-term goals. Decide if any additional equipment (better skates, exercise equipment, monitoring devices, etc.), trainers or locations are needed to work toward these goals.

  5. Expected Obstacles - Consider any obstacles that might interfere with work toward this skating goal - and include possible solutions or alternative goals.

  6. Target Dates - Set starting times as well as reasonable deadlines for your goals.

  7. Completion Notes - Keep records on what worked or did not work for future efforts.

Tips for setting your inline skating goals:

  • Setting skating goals should include writing down everything that you want to achieve at this time. Goals and plans may change, so update as needed to keep your goals current.
  • Build a skating plan that will give you a competitive edge.
  • Decide what you want from your roller sport, and keep your eyes on your goals.
  • Be specific about your skating goals, and if you don't have a trainer, let a skater that you respect review your goals and plan.
  • Network with others who support your skating efforts.

Remember to keep a list of all of the goals you have already accomplished, and make sure there is a maintenance plan in place. Review the past achievements as well as future goals the keep your motivation high.
