Definition:
Checking in inline, quad and ice hockey skating includes many defensive techniques during which the hockey player can use the hockey stick or part of their own body for defense without getting a penalty. Hockey checking often involves knocking opposing skaters into the boards or down to the skating surface. These moves can be penalized when performed haphazardly, and they are only allowed to be executed on opponents who possess the puck.
- Hitting from behind, boarding and charging are illegal hits.
- All body checking is penalized in amateur leagues, children's leagues and women’s hockey.
- An alternative to body checking is leaning, but leaning could get a holding penalty.
This type of check or checking is different from the figure and stunt checking moves which are used to stop a skater's rotation.
