Definition: The scratches at inline or roller sports competitions and events are any registered skating competitors who have canceled or withdrawn from the event. Illness, injury, major equipment failure and personal emergencies are common reasons for a participant athlete to scratch an event.
In some cases, where the number of participants or competitors determines the organization of an event, event scratches may eliminate a heat or reduce the number or qualification levels needed to determine the finalists at a competition. Skating coaches and athletes are always encouraged to reveal any known information about expected withdrawals, so that events and skaters can be re-organized accordingly.
