What is the Wheel Diameter for Inline Skates?

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The wheel diameter describes the height of an inline skate wheel. The most common wheel heights range from 43mm to 100mm. Inline and roller skate wheels come with two numbers on them (for example: 72mm 92A). The first number describes the height or diameter of the wheels. The second refers to the hardness or durometer of the wheels.
  • Inline recreational skates are usually 72mm and 76mm in diameter.

  • Speed skaters use the taller 80mm to 100mm wheels depending on the skates, the skater, the distance and the track surface.

  • Inline figure skaters use medium-sized high durometer wheels ranging from 68mm to 76mm for a mix of some speed with maneuvering capabilities.

  • Aggressive and freestyle skaters use smaller high durometer wheels ranging from 43mm to 76mm, depending on the skating style.
Usually, tall wheels provide more speed but are less maneuverable than small ones. Smaller wheels are better for stunts, slalom, dance and maneuvering.
