Know When to Get Help With Inline Skate Repairs

By Carlesa Williams, About.com

Many inline skaters take care of their own repairs, upgrades and fitting issues. Eventually you may want to do these things, too. But if you are new to the sport, not mechanically inclined or just want to save a little time by spending a little money, there are pro shops, rinks, skating centers and individuals (often coaches or instructors) who can take care of more advanced inline skate services that you may need, either now or later.

Find Inline Skate Repair Services

Most items on your inline skates can be repaired or replaced. Even things like buckles, boot liners and frames. Although, in some cases replacing something important like a frame on a stock skate model is not worth the cost and inconvenience. Check with your local inline skate dealer or call your skate manufacturer for a dealer in your area that performs repairs. Most roller rink shops, skate specialty shops, some independent online skate stores and local individuals will also offer skate repair services. A good service will tell you if the repairs you need are reasonable ones to consider or if it's time to buy new skates. Another sign of a good repair service will be that they already know where to get any parts or supplies needed for your repair. If you are considering using an individual or small independent retailer, try to get as many references as possible. Or even better, use a service that a skating instructor or fellow skater has used.

Upgrades Can Be Recommended and Installed

Eventually many of the moving parts (wheels and bearings) of your inline skates will wear out and need to be replaced. As these components are replaced, you have a chance to choose different or better options for the discipline, activity, activity level or desired performance level you would like to get from your skates. If you do not know about the way that size (diameter), hardness (durometer) and shape (profile) affect wheel performance or need help with the meaning of the ratings in bearing selection, seek professional help until you feel confident about your choices and installation capabilities. Once you have found a good repair service, they will be your best resource for upgrades, too.

Let Professionals Take Care of Your Fitting Issues

Every inline skater has a different set of fitting concerns. Problems like blisters, calluses, feet sliding or shifting in the boot, rubbing, pronation/supination and more can cause a lot of discomfort or performance related skating issues. These can usually be corrected by using additional fit pads, orthotics, pronation insoles or other inserts. Your inline skate retailer or your instructor can refer you to boot fitters and services that specialize in correcting these problems for inline skaters.
