Inline Racing Strategy: Strategic Techniques for Inline Speed Skating

Know Yourself, Your Competition and Your Event

By , About.com Guide

The best technicians and fastest skaters do not necessarily own inline racing events. Speed, endurance and skating technique are very important, but many times the race will be won by the smartest skaters who have a good racing strategy, and know how to take advantage of knowledge about themselves, their opponents and their event requirements. Each serious competitor needs to be aware of his own personal strengths and weaknesses as well as those of the opponents. Only then will the skater to be able to choose and time the right strategic technique for each specific race.

Things to Know About Yourself and Your Competition

  • Sprinting capabilities
  • Short and long term endurance
  • Ability to pass or be passed
  • Preferred pack positions
  • If and when to break

Consider the Specifications of the Race

Strategy can be different for individual skaters depending on the distance of a race and whether it is a heat, semi-final or final event. The number of qualifiers per heat and the time or placement qualification requirements can also influence the choice of a good inline racing strategy for an event.

Build a Race Plan

When it's time for a race you should already know how you are going to manage the race as well as having a back up plan and options. Remember that what may work against one inline racer may not work against another, and allow for improvement among the other competitors. If you are skating smarter or stronger, they could be better prepared, too. Never under estimate your competition. And of course, keep in mind that sometimes the best laid plans must change during actual competition, and a there will be a need to think on your skates.
