Skating Things That Go Bump... and You Might

Beginner skating classes are so much fun to teach. This is the end of another five week session, and the little skaters are beginning to roll pretty fast and can do simple hops and turns. Although we work on stopping techniques and most have the badge to prove they can do it, the younger class members are often quite content with using what we call the "bump" method of stopping.

Bump a wall. Bump the floor. Bump each other. Bump Miss Carlesa. Scary for me – fun for the kids.

This is entertaining for anyone under 40 pounds who is also very close to the skating surface. But the rest of us adult or near adult-sized people must make learning how to heel brake and snow plow stop a priority. Make sure that you know how to fall and how to get up, too. In the world of inline skating there are many things that go bump. So be prepared, because you might be one of them.
