What is balance and why does an inline skater need it?

By , About.com Guide

Question: What is balance and why does an inline skater need it?
Most inline skating disciplines have one common requirement. Balance. Some skaters have good balance, which naturally aligns their body properly to keep them upright and over their skates. Others must learn balance.
Answer: Your inner ear system works with the eyes, muscles and joints to maintain your body's orientation. This ability to orient the body properly and the sense of coordination of body movement combine to make balance.

Balance is important for most sports, including inline skating. Having or developing good balance is essential to any inline skater to prevent unnecessary falls, because it basically keeps you on your feet. Balance is also essential for speed, maneuvering and stunts in all of the specific inline roller sports and extended skating activities. Many people are born with natural balance skills, but balance can be learned with proper training.
