What is the Wheelbase of an Inline Skate

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The wheelbase is a measurement of the length of an inline skate frame. This size measurement helps determine the stability and maneuverability of the inline skate setup. Skates with a long wheelbase will be more stable, but the long frame will not maneuver as well. A frame with a shorter wheelbase is more maneuverable but less stable. Hockey skaters, dance and slalom skaters, aggressive skaters and inline figure skaters choose inline skates with shorter wheelbases to allow for turns, tricks and curves. Speed skaters, marathon skaters, downhill racers and fitness skaters make stability a priority when they choose inline equipment. Beginners and recreational skaters usually choose inline skate frames with an average wheelbase length, so they get a little of the benefit of both frame lengths.
