Get a Job as an Inline Skating Camp Counselor

Discover the Fun of Camp Counseling

By , About.com Guide

If you love inline skating, have a lot of energy and really like people – especially kids, become an inline skating camp counselor. There are skating camps for skaters of all ages and for many inline skating disciplines, too. You will spend the summer living, eating, skating and sharing related activities with your specific assigned group of campers and with other camp participants. Your biggest responsibility will be to oversee a safe, healthy, productive and fun camp experience for your group. A good camp counselor may need to do many other things including managing outgoing campers and drawing out quiet ones. Your assigned group will spend a lot of time with you, so you must be a good role model in all ways. Remember that many camps may offer a variety of activities, so your sports and activity knowledge may need to extend beyond skating.

Skating Camp Counselor Responsibilities
  • Able to work with children or youth in outdoor or indoor (depending on camp facilities) skating activities

  • Willing to assist in teaching, leading or supervising skating and other assigned activities

  • Able to accept supervision and guidance from camp instructors and management

  • Have a lot of patience and a good sense of humor

  • Help organize participation for your group in camp programs, events, and other activities

  • Willing to be a good role model for campers including cleanliness, timeliness, chores, sportsmanship, and etiquette

  • Help develop good relations with parents
Skating Camp Counselor Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience in the specific skating sports and possibly other activities offered at the camp

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • 18 years of age or older

In addition to responsibilities shown above, resident counselors supervise daily chores, make sure that campers are appropriately dressed for their activities of the day and should always be aware of the health and well-being of their assigned skating campers.

Take the steps needed to become a skating camp counselor:
  • Visit camps that offer skating programs to make sure this kind of indoor or outdoor work interests you.

  • Learn basic first aid, so you know how to handle falls, sprains and other skating injuries or emergencies until a medical professional is available.

  • Be prepared by having enough skating skills to assist with activities.

  • Don't forget to have a resume or bio prepared to verify your age, education and any related experience.
Look for Camp Counselor Jobs

Get in touch with recreation centers, schools and camp programs near your area and also search online to find out about the programs camps are offering, and find out if there is a need for skating camp counselors. Chances are they will have existing programs. Or they may know of programs that may interest you. Remember that many camps offer skating as a small part of their activities and other camping skills may be required.
